When I was as young as you are, this legend was one of my favourite ones. It is an Irish legend. It is about two giants, Finn MacCool, who is Irish, and his enemy, a Scottish giant, Benandonner, The Red Man. Finn builds a causeway, which is a raised road or path across low or wet ground, to be able to get to the Scottish giants. Listen to the story to see what happens when the Red Man walks across the causeway to fight Finn. Look carefully at these pictures before you listen to the story.

On Sunday besides being Father's Day, it was the first day of winter in the Southern Hemisphere.

It is said that it is the shortest day of the year. This is because the sun rises late and sets early. It is the day we have least day light. Why does this happen?

"Have you ever heard of a solstice? There are two solstices every year, one in June and one in December. On about June 21, the North Pole is tilted farther toward the Sun than it is at any other time of the year and the South Pole is tilted farther away from the Sun. The June solstice is the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. The Northern Hemisphere gets more sunlight on the June solstice than on any other day of the year. On the same day, it’s the beginning of winter and the shortest day of the year in the Southern Hemisphere.

On about December 21, the positions of the North and South poles are reversed. The December solstice marks the beginning of summer in the Southern Hemisphere. That’s why Australians can celebrate Christmas sunbathing on the beach! The same day marks the start of winter in the north."

One of the nights when Jamie and Claudia were in the museum, Claudia tells Jamie to think about Michelangelo and the statue. Jamie finds this hard to do. So Mrs Frankweiler writes:

Hello Everybody!

I have decided to create this blog so that we can share different challenges and have a different way to communicate. That is why I thought of "Stretching into New Boundaries" as the title for this blog. I consider this blog to be a real challenge which stretches me to new boundaries! I hope that through this blog and wiki I may stretch you to new boundaries too!
