A Legend

When I was as young as you are, this legend was one of my favourite ones. It is an Irish legend. It is about two giants, Finn MacCool, who is Irish, and his enemy, a Scottish giant, Benandonner, The Red Man. Finn builds a causeway, which is a raised road or path across low or wet ground, to be able to get to the Scottish giants. Listen to the story to see what happens when the Red Man walks across the causeway to fight Finn. Look carefully at these pictures before you listen to the story.

Do you think there are any true facts which the legend based itself on?

Here is one of the myths we read in class which inspired you to write yours. Once again, this one is a different version. It is delightful to listen. Just sit back and enjoy!

The Time Tunnel

Hello Everyone, once again!

It has been a long time since I have posted but we have all been so busy with our Concert and other activities!

Now that we have started our last topic of the year, Ancient Rome, I am trying to find intersting activities which are related to this.

Let's walk into the past and try to find different objects which do not belong to the time. Look carefully and and see if you find the odd item.

Have fun!

What would you do?

As I was reading Mr Lund's blog, I came across this interesting situation. What would you recommend this child to do?

My mom asked me to watch my younger brother while she ran a quick errand. Two of my friends stopped by and want to play video games. I’m not supposed to have friends over when my mom’s not home. If they leave before she gets home, she will never know. What should I do?

Hello Everyone!

Hello Everyone!

Have you all had a good rest? Have you had fun? Do you have any interesting photos to share? I have had a nice holiday and feeling very restful.

Do you think we will remember what school was about on Monday? I think it will be hard on all of us after such a long break but I am looking forward to seeing you all! There are lots of interesting topics we will be working on this term.

I thought it would be good to start with something easy, a memory game.

Let's hope you enjoy it!

How true is the story of theTroyan War?

How true is the story of the Trojan War? We read and watched what we thought was a made up story told by Homer thousands of years ago. But did the city of Troy really exist? Was there a war between the Greeks and the Trojans?

I will be showing you, these coming days, a series of videos published by the BBC. Did this war truly exist?

Did you know?

On Sunday besides being Father's Day, it was the first day of winter in the Southern Hemisphere.

It is said that it is the shortest day of the year. This is because the sun rises late and sets early. It is the day we have least day light. Why does this happen?

"Have you ever heard of a solstice? There are two solstices every year, one in June and one in December. On about June 21, the North Pole is tilted farther toward the Sun than it is at any other time of the year and the South Pole is tilted farther away from the Sun. The June solstice is the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. The Northern Hemisphere gets more sunlight on the June solstice than on any other day of the year. On the same day, it’s the beginning of winter and the shortest day of the year in the Southern Hemisphere.

On about December 21, the positions of the North and South poles are reversed. The December solstice marks the beginning of summer in the Southern Hemisphere. That’s why Australians can celebrate Christmas sunbathing on the beach! The same day marks the start of winter in the north."

What do you think about just before going to sleep?

One of the nights when Jamie and Claudia were in the museum, Claudia tells Jamie to think about Michelangelo and the statue. Jamie finds this hard to do. So Mrs Frankweiler writes:

"But lying in bed just before going to sleep is the worst time for
organized thinking; it is the best time for free thinking. Ideas drift like clouds in an undecided breeze, taking first this direction and then that." (Konigsburg, 1967)

What do you think about just before going to sleep? Are your thoughts organized or just free thinking? Answer the poll and write a comment telling me what you think about.

Memory Game

I am getting really enthusiastic about starting with our topic on Ancient Greece. So . . . . let's play a memory game with pictures of the gods they believed in. I managed to do in 30 guesses. How many can you do?

By the way, do you know the name of the horse in the picture? Who was he?

It's Greek to me!

Have you ever heard this expression? We use it when we want to express that we do not understand something because it is very complex and difficult.

We are about to start our topic on Greece. The Greeks left us a great legacy. We will be studying about the meaning of this. In the meantime, play this game and see how many everyday words have been influenced by the Greek language. Good luck in the Olympics!

Task:
  • Go to the website: http://www.telescopictext.com/. You will see the sentence with shaded words.
  • Click on a shaded and see that part of the sentence expand. Read the new sentence and then choose another part to click on.
I thank Nik Peachey for sharing this!

Would you like to try this well-known one?

Betty Botter bought some butter,

better than the bitter butter,
and it made her butter better
so 'twas better

Stretching into New Boundaries

Hello Everybody!

I have decided to create this blog so that we can share different challenges and have a different way to communicate. That is why I thought of "Stretching into New Boundaries" as the title for this blog. I consider this blog to be a real challenge which stretches me to new boundaries! I hope that through this blog and wiki I may stretch you to new boundaries too!

So, what I would love you to do, dear 5B, is to pick up the challenge as well. My idea is to post as often as I can different ideas, games, poems and other activities which can trigger off your imagination and opinions.

Therefore, following the title of this blog my question today is . . .

What does this picture say to you? Do you like it? What does it make you feel? What do you see?

Do you think you could add a comment so as to share your thoughts?

Looking forward to your answers,

Miss Ivonne
